Chapter Fourteen

Nick

Nick was light on his toes for the rest of the weekend. After his kiss with Megan, he felt like he was on top of the world. He was still furious at Carolina, but he was able to tamp that down with thoughts of the moment on Megan's doorstep.

He called her the next day and something sounded off with her. She still agreed to come over. Part of their deal was her coming to see his space. He asked her if everything was okay when she headed over. Rushing around his house, he picked up stray coffee cups and notepads, putting them either in the dishwasher or in neat piles. A writer could never have too many notebooks, but Nick did notice he would occasionally get them confused and lose the notes for what he was working on because he couldn't remember which one was which.

It had been less than 24 hours since he'd seen her but he felt like if she didn't come over soon, he'd have to go over there just to see her face. Nick tossed a dishwasher tab into the machine and turned it on for a quick cycle. It should be finished before she made her way over there.

He started another pot of coffee— a large one this time and headed into the back to get dressed. Nick never made much of an effort on what he wore, but he knew it was important to Megan.

This time he didn't choose a ratty slogan t-shirt. He pulled a button-down from the hanger and put that on with a pair of halfway decent jeans. Nick pulled on a pair of oxford shoes, took a look at himself in the mirror, sighed and slid the shoes off.

She would know if he was trying too hard.

He chose the Converse instead and hung the button-down back up. Nick dug through his dresser and pulled out a long sleeve henley instead. After he slid that on, he headed back to the kitchen and stood impatiently by the coffee pot, waiting for the brew to finish.

There had been no communication from his sister since the previous night. He wasn't surprised by that. Carolina was one of the most stubborn people he'd ever met and that was saying something because he knew Megan. Now, Megan still had her beat, but Nick suspected Megan would probably rather die than give up something she believed in.

Carolina liked creature comforts and harmony most of the time. He thought maybe she'd come around in a few days. Once she got over the shock of their mom getting all over her. That wasn’t like Hester. Their mother wanted everyone to get along and normally she had her children's backs no matter what. Pride rumbled through him at how his mother reacted. It gave him hope for the future, especially if Megan was beginning to care for him like he was for her.

The doorbell rang just as he was pouring his coffee.

"Hold on!" he called. Nick finish pouring, set the pot back down, and rushed over to the door, careful not to scald his hand.
